2015 Higher Education Community Service Awards

 

The Connecticut Commission on Community Service and Office of Higher Education have recognized six students, student groups and faculty and staff with 2015 Higher Education Community Service Awards.

The honorees were announced on April 14 at an afternoon reception at the State Capitol. Award recipients were selected based on nominations for service projects that incorporate unique approaches and raise student participation to address community needs.  

The 2015 awards recipients by category:

 

Individual Student Awards

Hunter McGinty of Norwalk Community College lead and contributed hours to collecting non-perishable food items to start a campus food pantry for students.

  Faustino De La Cruz of University of Bridgeport started a BuildOn Chapter, served as a Resident Assistant and volunteers several times a week at the local YMCA.

Student Group Awards

High Chase Weekly Program, People Helping People of Eastern CT State University organized student volunteer  visits to a facility in Willington for adults unable to live independently.

Jeannine Gemma, Max Goto and Lily Egan of PHP accept award.
  Hunger and Homelessness Action Project of Yale University  benefits New Haven's homeless population and provides services to low-income residents.

Faculty and Staff Awards

Douglas Goodstein of UConn built the Give n' Go program on campus collecting over 10,000 lbs. of repurposed items for donation to local non-profits.

  Cathy Lechowicz of Wesleyan University helped secure the future of Green Street Teaching and Learn Center and the Center for Prison Education at the York women's prison and Cheshire men's prison.
